Demography and the Economy: Speeding to a Cliff
Demography is destiny, or so they say. The meaning implied is that demographic trends unfold like big waves in the ocean. They start far out on the horizon and then they crash and shake the ground as they break at the end. The subject of our discussion today is Demography and the Economy, with an emphasis on the United States. But note is taken of the more extreme trends in other developed countries, and the strikingly similar challenges arising in many emerging markets.

Last week, leaders from leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – formally known as the “BRICS” – assembled in Johannesburg for a (until very recently) largely overlooked three-day summit to discuss expanding the bloc’s membership and moving away from US-dollar dominance. The outcome of the meeting was a major milestone for the otherwise economically and politically disparate group.
