With profound gratitude, we celebrate the life of Alan Greenspan, one of the most influential economic policymakers of the modern era and a treasured friend and advisor to RockCreek.
Alan joined RockCreek’s Advisory Board following his distinguished tenure as Chairman of the Federal Reserve. From the beginning, he embraced RockCreek’s mission with enthusiasm and generosity, sharing his time, wisdom, and insight with our team and clients. He was also a dear friend of our Founder and CEO, Afsaneh Beschloss, whose friendship spanned many years and was built on a shared passion for economics, public service, and thoughtful dialogue.
As Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006, Alan helped guide the U.S. economy through periods of extraordinary growth, volatility, and change. He also served as Chairman of President Gerald Ford’s Council of Economic Advisers and was not only widely regarded as one of the most influential economists of his generation, but as Liaquat Ahamed, a member of the RockCreek Advisory Board, says, one of the most critical thinkers among policy makers of the last 30 years.
To those who knew him, Alan was far more than a renowned economist. He was endlessly curious, remarkably generous with his time, and always eager to engage in meaningful conversation. Whether discussing global markets, history, or public policy, he had a unique ability to listen carefully, challenge assumptions, and inspire fresh thinking. His warmth, wit, and quiet sense of humor made every conversation memorable.
Alan believed deeply in the importance of lifelong learning and intellectual curiosity. He encouraged us to think independently, embrace complexity, and approach every challenge with humility and discipline. His counsel shaped not only our perspectives on markets and the economy, but also the values that continue to guide our firm.
Alan’s legacy will endure through the institutions he helped shape, the leaders he mentored, and the countless lives touched by his wisdom and friendship. We are deeply grateful for his years of service to RockCreek and for the privilege of calling him our colleague, mentor, and friend.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Alan’s amazing wife, Andrea Mitchell, his family, and all who had the honor of knowing him.
