John Lipsky is the Peterson Distinguished Scholar at the Kissinger Center for Global Affairs of Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a Senior Fellow at SAIS’s Foreign Policy Institute.

Dr. Lipsky served a five-year term as the First Deputy Managing Director (FDMD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), served as Acting Managing Director from May to July 2011, and was Special Advisor to the Managing Director through the Cannes G20 Leaders Summit in November 2011.

Prior to being named the IMF’s First Deputy Managing Director, Dr. Lipsky was Vice Chairman of the JPMorgan Investment Bank. Previously, he had been the Chief Economist and Director of Research of Chase Manhattan Bank, following service as the Chief Economist of Salomon Brothers, Inc. Before joining Salomon Brothers, Dr. Lipsky spent a decade at the IMF, where he helped manage the Fund’s exchange rate surveillance procedure, participated in negotiations with several member countries, and served as the Fund’s Resident Representative in Chile from 1978 to 1980.

Dr. Lipsky’s current activities include serving as the Chair of the National Bureau of Economic Research, as the Vice Chair of the Center for Global Development, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Bretton Woods Committee, as a member of the Advisory Board of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) and as a Director of both the American Council on Germany and the Center for Global Development Europe. Dr. Lipsky also is a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.
